# Snook

## Snook

Snook is an online, multiplayer, Snake-like IO game… \[gulp…I mean… comparing it to the old Nokia Snake is like comparing Bruce Banner to the Hulk.] It is a kill-or-be-killed, adrenaline-charged, multiplayer game that is pioneering NFT game characters. That means players’ performance directly affects the NFT face value (more about that below).

## Snook and snook

Snook (upper-case "S") refers to the game of Snook. (Just like the game of Basketball.)&#x20;

snook (lower-case "s") refers to the snook NFT/game-character that is used in Snook the game. (Just like a basketball is used in the game of Basketball.) Cool?

## **Super-quick gameplay overview**

Unlike some play-to-earn NFT-gamified/NFT-infused games, in Snook the players' in-game character IS an NFT, with your skill and gameplay achievements immutably recorded on chain. This snook-NFT, your game character, as long as it does not die, can be played in future games. It also retains value as a digital asset and collectible on the secondary market. ## **Skilled "work" defines NFT value – pretty nifty**

Snook is the first game in a new NFT crypto-space – one that determines the face-value and affects the market value of NFTs through measurement of skilled "work" invested in their creation and development. It's a crypto meritocracy and similar to that thing your parents used to say: 'if you work hard and apply yourself, you'll reap the rewards'…&#x20;

This merger between a relatively new, decentralized, trust-agnostic, and immutable economic paradigm and one of humanity’s most popular pass-time - gaming - is surprisingly natural and seamless. Players spend time playing. They develop skills with patience and persistence. Until today, their efforts were measured in their score, ranking and/or character evolution. Rewards were emotional and social. It felt good, and you got "street cred". However, like all economies, if one invests work/effort/energy in something, it should be possible to exchange the "fruits" of that labor with other things that also store value. Those could be money (e.g., Fiat or FT/cryptocurrencies), commodities (which are still fungible, i.e., they are the same and replacing one with another does not affect its value), or non-fungible items (e.g., NFTs). Which leads us to Snook – a game that allows players to monetize their performance and capture their unique gaming achievements in their NFTs. Moreover, Snook makes certain achievements especially difficult to realize, allowing exceptional players to monetize their skill. As such, Snook is a steppingstone towards:

This Ontology list is a partial list of the entire game ontology. However, we will not list everything in the Snook reality. That will take too long and since changes are implemented all the time, keeping track of it is a bitch. # Infrastructure

#### **Lair**

The Lair is where you, like Smaug, can “sleep” on your valuable assets. It is the main UX from which you mint snooks, see your “portfolio”, select servers, and start playing.

#### **Hexagonal tile inlay**

The fundamental layer of the game’s arena (the game-map). Normally it comes in gradient blue. During special occasions/events or in Themed Rooms (see below Big Boys table Themed Rooms) the design of the hexagonal tile inlay may change.

#### **Arena**

The area in which snooks can move. The arena can have a design overlaid on top of the hexagonal tile inlay.

#### **Gameplay UX (HUD)**

When playing the user/Snooker\*/player has, in addition to the limited view of the immediate space around it, a mini-map showing the snook’s location in the entire arena, a scoreboard with real-time ranking, indicators with the number of players currently in the arena, and the actual ping time in milliseconds. There are additional UI elements, but what fun would it be if we write all of them here. Explore and discover on your own.

#### **Shrinking Arena and the Red Zone (Death Zone)**

Yup, pretty straight forward. In some modes the arena itself shrinks, by reducing the border’s radius. The shrinking arena is executed in “waves”. A set time after the match starts, a new red circle appears. It defines the new arena size. At the same time, a timer countdown appears, indicating the start of the shrinking. The area between the current border and the new border appears as a red ring. Hence the name, “Red Zone”. Once the timer reaches zero the arena starts shrinking. At this stage any snooks in the Red Zone should get the f@#k out of the way. Staying in the Red Zone reduces score/mass (which could make your snook vulnerable or kill it if it goes to zero). Once the new border has been reached, the arena goes back to a static mode. At least until the next “wave” starts.

# The snook

### **\[Pickle] snook backstory**

Ever see a cat's reaction to a cucumber? Well, the first snook was the result of a freak Cucumber accident at a secret lab in a Scandinavian country with a name the rhymes with inland. That day Janice was on her way back after raiding the communal fridge for unlabeled food. She got lost and long story short she dropped a teenage cucumber into a flux capacitor. The resulting pickle became conscious at 11:13 (May 4th, 1984). We're not sure why they called it a snook. It may have been because although it looked like a snake, crawled like a snake and ate like a snake, they knew it was not a snake. Or maybe it was just their terrible "inish" accent. Since then, the green snook, not unlike the Hulk, has been smashing it.

#### **Mint**

Minting a snook costs $1.25 USDC and is paid in $SNK.

#### **Lives and Resurrection**

Each snook comes with 5 lives and 1 Trait. After dying 5 times it is still possible to resurrect it at a cost. For more about Resurrection click [here](/economy-overview/snk-cash-flow-analysis/snk-inflow/resurrecting-deceased-snooks).

#### **Morphology**

Your snook has a head, a body, and a tail. (There’s actually a more detailed morphology and anatomy, but for our purposes three body parts are enough.)

#### **Traits**

Traits affect the appearance of the snook. They control its color, body pattern, and added wearable SWAG. Freshly minted snooks are fairly plain except for a single randomly assigned Trait. Additional Traits can be collected. We elaborate below on how to acquire additional Traits and their importance. Below is the screen you see when you click on the Snook Journey in the Lair main screen. It shows the Traits associated with a specific snook-NFT.

# Special Skins

Special Skins are hidden assets that get unlocked when a player collects a certain combination of Traits. Once that happens and the final needed Trait is collected, the snook changes into the Special skin - a complete, themed, and awesome looking snook design. Every Special Skin has a three-level Star rank. The order of collecting the Traits doesn't matter and that there is no such thing as "feeling full" so you don't need to collect more Traits. You always want more Traits. More about that in [Gameplay ](/gameplay)below.

# Traits

#### **Function and Role in the Snook economy**

In addition to their in-game utility, Traits serve as Snook’s fundamental, unpegged vehicle for storing monetary value. Fundamental because when they are aggregated, in specific combinations, in a snook-NFT, they form a compound unpegged vehicle for storing monetary value, the Special Skin. If this seems to be a bit vague, please read on. We elaborate on these terms below and especially in [Economy and Gameplay](/economy-overview).

#### **Appearance**

In the game Traits appear encased in semi-translucent prisms or spheres.

#### **Trait assignment**

Traits can be assigned to different parts of the snook based on a secret Neo-Ophidian Neural Yotta-Byte Integrated Zeta (Ness).

#### **Trait Acquisition**

**Excuse me! You dropped something.**

A freshly minted snook comes with one random Trait. When a snook dies in the game it leaves in its wake all the orbs it consumed, and sometimes, not always\*, Traits\*\*.&#x20;

*\*There’s a probability function that determines the chance, type/s and number of Traits that will be dropped. What’s the function, you ask? It’s N(ON)=Ya\[B/SN(ess)].*&#x20;

*\*\* It is possible, that a snook will posthumously drop more than a single Trait selected at random, or even all of its Traits. That’s because the probability function is applied independently to each of the snook parts.*

**Other ways**

There are other ways of acquiring Traits. Most of these other ways are relevant to and discussed in the [Game Modes](/gameplay/game-modes), so be patient.


# Gameplay

Snook’s gameplay is inseparable from Snook’s economy. This is a key point. Unlike many other crypto/NFT-infused games, in Snook the act of playing is akin to the act of producing in traditional economies. Truth be told, there are games out there in which the play itself contributes to the economy. Nevertheless, in most cases this contribution is secondary to the main economic engine, i.e., trading and financial speculation. In Snook the role of gameplay is the economic engine, with the entire economy revolving around it. In order to keep things simple, we will use this section of the whitepaper to focus on **describing** the different facets of Snook’s gameplay and provide a lexicon of sorts. The next section, Economy & Gameplay, will use the foundation we lay here, to describe and explain the economy and its mechanics.


# Motivation for playing

## Rationale

Some people play games for fun. Some play to win. Only few play professionally and make money. Snook is creating a new gaming scenario – one that has never existed before. People can play for fun, to win, AND to make money. The problem is that only a few will really be good enough to make a lot of money. It's not a big problem – because today no one makes money. However, for Snook to work most players must aspire to do better. They must believe that they can do and earn more. And that's the magic. Snook monetizes skill and performance. It does that objectively and empirically. It does not care what players believe. And oftentimes there's a gap between what people believe they can achieve and what they actually do.

## Few players are really good but hey, there's the Dunning-Kruger effect

In any skill-based activity, and therefore also games, some people are better than others. It's a combination of talent and practice. Most ranking distributions are bell-shaped and symmetric around the mean. However, in games that include a monetary incentive (as in our case, an NFT financial environment,) the ranking distribution gets skewed. That means that few players are good enough to win significate-enough incentives, while most win very little or none at all. This phenomenon stems from the added layer of stress that "thins the herd" (leaving players that do not buckle under pressure). In the case of NFTs this is exacerbated by the fact that the rarity-based NFT payout is not linear. These two elements lead us to assume that in Snook only a few people will make enough money to rationally justify the effort (again excluding the exhilaration and fun); some people will make some money, and most will not. This likely reality may sound like a deterrent to playing the game. Well, this is where the Dunning-Kruger effect comes into play (pardon the pun). The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with low aptitude tend to overestimate their ability. This stems both from their overconfidence in their own ability and from a misperception of the skills and abilities of others. And this is where it gets cool. \
\
Either way, you'll play because: \
1\. You think you belong to the group that is good enough to be appropriately rewarded (and perhaps you do)\
&#x20;2\. There's no way of telling if you are right or if you are a victim of the Dunning-Kruger effect (I mean, what if you are good enough and others suck?).&#x20;

The promise to monetize your skill and performance stays true. The thing is that sometimes people have a misperception of their skill.

Now, we can add to that the fact that gamers have almost nothing to lose and that playing is fun, and we have a game that most people would prefer over other games. Very much like the joke about the two people running from a Lion. One stops to put on running shoes. The other asks him: "Do you really think shoes will help you outrun the Lion. "No." He responds. "But I'll outrun you…"

# Basic game mechanics

#### **Moving**

Your snook moves. If you do nothing it will move forward. Use your mouse or keyboard to change its direction. Use the space-bar/left button to accelerate.

#### **Eating**

Orbs are scattered at random throughout the arena. Also, when a snook dies it drops all of the orbs it ate along the area it used to occupy. Eating orbs makes your snook bigger (mass increases) and adds to your score. Mass/score matters because of two reasons. The first is that you need it to accelerate (when you're hunting other snooks or maneuvering to avoid them). The second is that if your score drops to zero, you die. Further down we elaborate on how that can happen.&#x20;

#### **Killing**

If a snook’s head touches your snook’s body, it dies.

#### **Dying**

First, we should discern between losing a life and dying. As we mentioned above, each snook is minted with 5 lives. When you die in the game and your snook still has lives, you are ejected from the match, but it is still playable. Only once the snook dies for the fifth time is it “All Dead” (and even then, Miracle Max can bring it back to life). Anyway, putting aside the post-mortem, the in-game experience is the same. Other than being killed by another snook, there are two other ways in which a snook can die. The first is if its score/mass goes down to zero. This could happen in the Red Zone (or if you curl up like a woose).  The second is colliding into the arena border.

# Less basic, but still pretty basic

**Accelerating**

Note that acceleration reduces your score and reduces the size and mass of your snook.

#### **Mass matters**

As mentioned, when a snook's score goes to zero it dies \[loses a life]. Since acceleration is the number one cause for “losing weight”, we’ve put in place an acceleration limit at a score of 100. That means you can’t accelerate anymore if your mass is at 100.

#### **Going into the fetal position**

Turning on your own body (curling up) results in immediate reduction of score/mass.

#### **Lock-’n-load**

Lock ‘N Load allows the user to commit multiple snooks to a play session. This makes reentering the game faster. It also reduces certain network /blockchain information- propagation errors and lowers transaction costs.&#x20;

Lock ‘N Load combines two actions into a single click. It “locks” the snook in the game. That means that while it is locked, she cannot sell it or transfer it, or try to play with a dead snook. We think it’s pretty clear why. And it enables “allow game” which means that Snook can now update her snook’s metadata / state on the blockchain. Someone said something about mutating NFTs? pretty cool.

#### **Pay Per Kill (PPK)**

All of Snook’s game modes provide play-to-earn/prize opportunities. The most basic, available in the Battle Arena, is the PPK. \[Not to be confused with the Walther PPK that belongs to a different franchise.]&#x20;

If you’ve made it this far you already understand this part. Killing is not a huge skill, but it is still a skill and on a very basic level it separates Snookers the Killers from the Killed. Providing a quick reward for Killing brings a larger part of the Snookers community to skill-based reward. Different and additional reward mechanisms are discussed below and in Economy & Gameplay.

#### **Resurrecting**

Snook can be a highly rewarding game but at the same time an unforgiving one. When your snook dies in-game, you can say your goodbyes, which means the snook-NFT will be burned. That can be tough. A snook dying (after expending 5 lives) can represent a significant loss of value (in terms of effort and time invested, as well as Traits and or Special Skin acquired. The Battle Arena mode (see below) allows you to resurrect your snook within a 1-hour time window after death. It will cost you. For more details see the Cost of Resurrection in Economy and Gameplay.


# Game Modes

Snook has three game modes. **Battle Arena**, **Ladder**, and the **Big Boys Table** (sometimes we refer to it as **BBT**). Currently (June 2022) Ladder is still in testing, and it is expected to be launched before the end of the summer.

# Battle Arena

The Battle Arena mode is an LOS (Last One Standing) challenge mode. Snookers get an opportunity to demonstrate their skill by crushing others, collecting special Traits and receiving pay per kill. Here’s the short version: 8-15 Snookers playing on a small and shrinking map. Selecting this mode adds the Snooker into a queue, the game starts as soon as there are at least 8, but no more than 15 Snookers. Games are capped at 12 minutes. Last One Standing wins

* Once the match starts, other Snookers can’t join in.&#x20;

4\. Snook will search for other players wanting to join the match.

5\. Once a match is found there are two options:

* Waiting until there are at least 8 snookers ready to play.
* If the Snooker is the 8th or higher, she will be connected to the match immediately.

#### **Additional information that didn’t fit any of the other headers**

* **A sometimes-appearing, single-use extraction portal.**&#x20;

  There’s a chance an extraction portal will appear at a random place and time. If a snook uses that portal, she can exit the game without losing any of her snook-NFT attributes.
* **Trait Vault**

  The Vault is a box with a timer appearing in the arena in a random place and at a random time. When it opens it reveals a Trait. A special Trait that can only be obtained by collecting it from the vault or winning the match (Although unlike collecting it from the Vault, if you win the Battle Arena you might get the Trait, but you also might not. Just like before there’s a probability function).

#### Earning

The Battle Arena has several options for earning:

* **PPK** - Battle Arena is Snook’s PPK arena. Go to the PPK sub-section for more about its mechanics. Below you can see the $SNK she earned \[PPK - s/he was awesome! S/He killed all 7 other snooks. Phew. I mean who is s/he Anton frekin’ Chigurh?]

# Big Boys Table

The Big Boys Table (BBT) separates those who talk from those with skill. It allows you to create and/or participate in a Snook game in a dedicated arena with the winner taking the prize\* ($$). The Big Boys Table is a type of game-mode where users can stake collaterals (tokens) against each other, and the winner takes it all home.

\*Note that this mode does not have an NFT element to it, which means you don’t need to mint or have a minted snook-NFT to play. Our Crypto mission is also to normalize crypto and build a bridge on which noobs can walk without fear (Yes, we are aware of the irony. Shut up.). Inclusivate now!

#### **The different types of Rooms**

The standard\* Big Boys Table comes in several configurations (the setup of which we describe below). To keep things organized, let’s start with the flow of the UX and that will lead us to the classification of rooms.&#x20;

2. This leads you to the Big Boys Table Dashboard. That is a good way to review the different types of rooms.
   * **Game Mode**: Death match / LOS (Last One Standing) / Teams
     * **DeathMatch**

       Kills count. Room creator decides on up to 7 rounds, the Arena itself is smaller and shrinks faster. On the other hand, there’s no Dianoga, so, take comfort in that. Every round ends when there’s a last Snook in the Arena. However, as hinted above, in this Mode winning and ranking is based on number of kills. Every kill grant the player with +1 points and every kill-by-wall (suicide) penalty the player with -1 point.

       So, if a Snooker is not aggressive and uses the famous Monty Python “run away” strategy, he might survive till the end, but he will receive no laurels. Just mockery. In case of a draw the winners split the allocated prize.
     * **Last One Standing (LOS)**

       Well…the winner is the last snook in the Arena
     * **Teams (Not related to an overly complex MS solution)**

       This mode is limited to two teams \[Anyone not belonging to your team is fair game (pun, very much, intended]. The number of rounds is 1,3,5 or 7 (best-of), to allow for a winning team that will have the largest number of wins.
   * **Staking:**

     If staking is “on” it means that every player is required to contribute an equal Stake to a communal prize pool. If it is off, it means the creator provides the prize.
   * **Private or Public:**

     Anyone can access a public room, that’s why it’s called public. If private, then the room creator can either gate the room with a password that is verifiable on-chain (kinda cool), or can toggle Collections ON, then select a certain collection if applicable.

So, you chose one of the rooms from the dashboard and you clicked on “Join”. You are now here. We honestly feel that if you survived this far, and since we try to be consistent with our language and UX, you should be able to find your way around this screen on your own.

# BBT Themed Rooms (BBT-TR)

**Rationale and Core Features**

We at Snook are proponents of collaboration and encourage the setup of crypto communities. This is the state of mind that drove this very cool mini Snook-verse - providing a personalized environment for crypto communities. This personalized Snook environment provides existing and new crypto (and non-crypto) communities exposure to new users with similar interests, and an opportunity to promote their offering. That is why everyone who interacts with Snook can see every listed BBT-TR. It’s also a fun place, with a familiar look-and-feel to hang-out and play together, strengthening the sense of community and belonging.&#x20;

The most basic application of BBT-TR is for NFT collections. A crypto NFT collection reaches out to Snook. They can choose if to design the graphic assets on their own or to provide Snook with the graphic assets and we will put the room together for them. Once that is done, the collection gets listed on Snook and it becomes available through the game UX. Now, anyone who meets the access criteria they set up, for example ownership of an NFT from the Collection, can join and play Snook in their BBT-TR. Easy Peasy. Ask Lobster DAO, one of the first communities to set up their own Themed Room.&#x20;

For Snook this is a great opportunity to expose Snook to new communities (reducing the individual user acquisition cost), as well as a way to tap into new markets.

#### **Who is BBT-TR for?**

Anyone who wants to create a unique branded experience to his community/followers/etc.

#### **Participation**

As mentioned above the BBT-TR is designed to empower crypto-communities and brands. That first term, “crypto-communities” is purposefully ambiguous. We do not want to limit the participation. In fact, we want to set a low bar for participation. Therefore, if a group of crypto-enthusiasts wants to set up a BBT-TR they can fairly easily create a small NFT collection and apply for it to be listed in Snook. There is also the matter of Staking which we describe next. (We said “low bar”. We didn’t say no bar.)

#### **Staking**

In this sub-sub-section we will simply describe what is required if one wants to list and set up a BBT-TR. In the Economy and Gameplay we go into the economic implications and the cool innovation that it is.&#x20;

Anyone wanting to list an NFT collection, and set up a BBT-TR will be required to stake a certain amount of $SNK. That staking amount is differential and depends on the attributes of each specific group. It is also a minimal staking bar for activation of the BBT-TR. However, if they redeem some of their staked $SNK and the amount staked goes below the defined threshold, the collection and its BBT-TR will become inactive, until the difference is deposited in the staking contract.\

#### **Access criteria**

BBT-TR are private by default. That means that when the BBT-TR is designed, its owners define a set of criteria. If a user wants to play in a listed BBT-TR environment she has to meet those criteria. In the case of NFT Collections it will most commonly be ownership of one or more NFTs from the collection.

Currently we can implement privileged access to token holders of the following protocols: ERC20, ERC721. You can create and play BBT-TR via any chain supported by Snook. It does not matter which blockchain the NFT collection itself lives on, it will work fine in Snook.

#### **Set up**

When creating a Themed Room, the setup dialog box includes a radio button that toggles the BBT-TR option on and off. If toggled on, a dropdown menu becomes active with a list of all listed BBT-TR. If the creator does not meet the criteria for any of the listed BBT-TR, the listed BBT-TR will be grayed. If she is authorized, she can select from the ones that are available to her.&#x20;

If you are sure that you should have access and the list is all in gray, you should check if you are connected with the wallet associated with that BBT-TR/collection.


# Snook Ladder

The Ladder is Snook’s competitive arena for Snook players who are skilled enough. It is also the main driver of the Snook economy, and the source of the Special Skins utility.

The Ladder is about individual ranking (score) within a given season that top players etch out by playing strategically (and being freakin’ killing machines). We’ll get into the weaves in a second. In the meantime, here’s the gist.

* The Ladder is a score/ranking game accrued over a 4-week season.&#x20;
* Scoring is differential and is based on various game events and achievements. These include participation, killing other snooks, winning a match, etc.&#x20;
* There’s no Trait drops when killing other snooks in Ladder matches.&#x20;
* There’s no PPK rewards when killing other snooks in Ladder matches.&#x20;
* There’s no limit on the number of games you can play. So, to climb the Ladder ranking, players need to play as many games as possible.&#x20;
* To qualify for playing in the Ladder, players need to have at least one Special Skin.&#x20;
* Games are played in dedicated arenas, only on Saturday and Sunday, and the season lasts 4 consecutive weekends. After/before each season, there's a two-week hiatus - to recover and restock for the next season.

#### **Environment and setup**

* 8-15 Snookers&#x20;
* Once the match starts, other Snookers can’t join in.&#x20;
* Matches are time-capped.&#x20;

As mentioned above, a Ladder season has 4 weekly cycles. Given the name… Ladder…we went with the uninspiring “Steps” for the first three cycles, and named the last week of the season, “End of Season Rush”. The Ladder arenas open on Saturday (00:00 UTC) and close on Sunday (24:00 UTC). The time between seasons and between weekends during the season is used mostly to stock-up with Special Skins and Traits.

The Ladder is all about score and individual ranking. At the end of each match the Snooker gets the following report:

Each achievement is assigned a score:

* Snooking - You get one point for participation (because as many divorced parents learn, sometimes just showing up is worth a point). To that single point we add bonus points. Wait for it…&#x20;
* Bonus Points - They are your snook’s Special Skin Star ranking&#x20;
* kill(s) - Each kill is worth a set number of points. Currently it is 2. Those are multiplied by the multiplier, which is, in this case, 2, and which we will now explain as well.&#x20;
* Multiplier - The multiplier measures the rarity of a Special Skin out of all the Special skins in circulation (aggregated across all chains). A distribution function assigns the values.

This feature is a key part of the economy and should get more respect than a secondary bullet-point under a sub-sub section of Gameplay. We will shine a brighter light on it further down in Economy and Gameplay.

* Position - Additional points provided based on match ranking:
  * 1st place = 10pts
  * 2nd place = 7pts
  * 3rd place = 4pts

#### Prizes

The prize pool is derived from the Mint/Resurrection-fee allocations (more about that below in the Economy and Gameplay). Prizes are awarded to (up to) the top 100 Snookers on the Leaderboard after the season ends.&#x20;

Eligible Snookers are divided into two groups with the top three places taking the lion share of the prize pool and the rest differentially distributed, in tiers, among the rest of the players.


# Real Chain-agnostic Architecture

Snook has designed and implemented a true chain-agnostic architecture based on cross-chain messaging technology. The idea behind this technology is deviously simple. The potential is difficult to overestimate.

#### **Context - Transacting in Information**

Blockchain is also known as Decentralized Ledger Technology. As such we tend to think about it, and the Smart Contracts that execute its operations, in accounting terms, as messengers of monetary transactions. Extending the blockchain utility beyond keeping records of ownership is not new. We’ve been living in the age of Vitalik Buterin for a while now. Nevertheless, some basic conceptions are difficult to shake off, and every now and then we discover new implications of his vision that in hindsight seem inevitable.

Interaction is something that happens when at least two things affect each other. It spawns two types of activities:&#x20;

* Transaction – The exchange of things
* Communication – The exchange of information

They in turn sometimes result in added value, which is our definition of collaboration: Collaboration – an interaction that creates value. Blockchain allows us to interact, transact, communicate, and therefore collaborate.

#### **Smart Contracts Yapping**

Smart Contract messaging seems almost underwhelming. The fundamental ERC protocols share syntax, and cross-chain inter-smart-contract communication is obviously no news. The question is what can you do with that. Snook used this technology to build a gaming environment in which different players using different chains and networks can play together and settle accounts seamlessly without the risk, or certainty of asset fragmentation, and without the cumbersome use of bridges.&#x20;

We were able to do that because of a technology that enables the inter-chain transfer of information between smart contracts, or as we like to call it DCG (Decentralized Cyber-crypto Gossip).

#### **Motivation - Asset Fragmentation and Echoing**

Interaction across multiple chains, especially in the NFT context, architecturally and therefore inventively leads to asset fragmentation. On-chain records of the asset, and changes to its state, are kept on each chain separately. Keeping track of the asset’s echoes across chains has been a deterrent for cross-chain implementation of interactive environments such as games. The few claims for the implementation of multichain architecture do not offer cross-chain interaction. They offer segregated environments implemented as “stand alone” in multiple chains.

Moreover, hopping between chains via different bridge solutions, although not impossible, is an almost insurmountable barrier for most players. (Not because they cannot figure it out. Because they lose interest long before they venture into learning how to use it.)

Snook of course wants to be open to all players from all networks and chains, and it wants it (being chain-agnostic) not to diminish the gameplay experience in any way. That was the motivation that led us to develop this solution.


# Snook is Chain-agnostic

#### **Decentralized Snook Cores**&#x20;

Implementing cross-chain messaging technology allowed us to deploy additional “Snook Cores”. Each Core is a self-sustaining, fully functional Snook economy. They are basically mechanisms for receiving funds and distributing them according to set criteria. The basic functions of the Core, as mentioned, is to receive and distribute funds. The nodes in the Snook Cores Network (SCN) are able to realize their function because they communicate with each other, sharing information about ranking, scores, winnings and other salient parameters required in order to calculate reward allocations for the different game modes.

Note: This could have been achieved centrally manually or with RPA. This is why we call it Decentralized Snook Cores, and this solution automates the process and removers central intervention.

#### **Game experience**

Players from different chains play against/with each other in the same map. The fact that their assets are stored on different networks has no impact on the game experience.

#### **Battle Arena - Minting and PPK**

Imagine two users about to play Snook. One is minting a snook on Polygon and the other on Harmony. The minting cost is processed separately on each chain. The allocation for PPK rewards is kept separately as well and paid independently at the end of the match, each from its designated SCN.

#### Load Balancing&#x20;

This raises the question, what if the player from the Harmony chain kills more than the player from Polygon? Will this not create a deficit in the Harmony Treasury. The simple answer is that it might, and we have designed a solution for that. Over a long enough period and with a wide enough user base on both, or all, networks, these discrepancies would even out. However, they might still occur “locally” and require a dedicated solution. For that we developed a load-balancing algorithm. The idea is that if one Snook Core has a deficit, others (some or all) will have a surplus and those funds can be routed to the underfunded Treasury to cover its PPK obligations.

#### **The Big Boys Table**

The impact of this technology on the Big Boys Table is different. This game mode is not chain-agnostic in the same way we described above. That means that a Room created on Polygon is accessible only for Snookers from Polygon at this stage. However, the Big Boys Table also has the Themed Rooms (Sometimes referred to as “Collections”). The Chain-agnostic approach allows us to integrate admittance criteria from other chains. If, for example, a user has NFTs on a Gnosis chain and to be admitted to an BBT-TR she needs to prove ownership, she can do that even if the Themed Room itself is being played on a different (not Gnosis) chain.&#x20;

Collection owners will be able to receive royalties from BBT-TR created on Polygon to their multisig safe on different chains.

#### **Snook Ladder**

We suspect that those who have been paying attention so far (kudos) can imagine the implementation in the Ladder. Basically, what is happening in the background is continuous chatter between the different networks to provide a near-real time score and ranking. The actual reward calculation is done at the end of the season and is tallied only after all information has been shared and propagated in the SCN. The Fund Load Balancing ensures that all Treasuries have sufficient funds. Neat.


# Ramifications

#### **A New Market Framing**

This has been a pet-peeve of ours for a while now. Web3 has been skewed towards the blockchain / network providers, which translated into forcing debilitating constraints on developers and users. It stems from the fact that, ceteris paribus, chains tend to be incompatible with one another. Cross-chain transactions require a bridge or other cumbersome solutions. Those are, for most users, insurmountable. We’re not implying a conspiracy. We’re saying that differences in architecture and deployment technologies created a mono-chain, segregated reality, and that the burden it incurs is being carried by the developers and users. Perhaps an example will illustrate. Imagine a DApp (let’s say it’s an NFT game with a name that rhymes with Kabook). It decided to develop on X infrastructure for example AT\&T. The potential market for the DApp is anyone who likes the game, regardless of the infrastructure they are familiar with. However, if a user is accustomed to using a different infrastructure, one that uses, for example, Verizon, functioning across the providers(e.g., moving funds) is not trivial. To convert that user, the DApp needs to invest effort not only in convincing him to adopt the game, but also in convincing him to adopt a new provider.

This exact setup has made the lives of blockchain network providers easy. They need to convert (sell to) the DApp developers once. After that they have little incentive to compete. The DApp and users are a captive audience.  That DApp can partially solve this by deploying separately and autonomously on different chains. However, it’s only a partial solution because although it allows access to more users, the DApp’s tokenomics/game-economics are still segregated and cannot interact across chains. Also, it’s an expensive solution because the cost of user acquisition and retention, as well as service maintenance and other overhead are multiplied.&#x20;

Snook, by employing this new technology, has flipped things around. Now the issue of incompatible networks is moot. As long as information can stream across networks the only cost is deployment. The users can play with other players from other networks, while the “accounting” is settled after the match or at the end of the season.

This is huge because the users are now free to evaluate the chain for themselves (and not be beholden to the choice of the DApp. A choice that was made months or years before, and which was based on different types of criteria). The Blockchain network provider can’t rest on the laurels of their initial sale. They now must innovate and compete to attract and retain users (thus lowering gas prices, improving performance, reducing down time, etc.)&#x20;

You get the picture, right? We think it's pretty awesome.

#### **WEB3 Desegregation**

It also means that we can deliver WEB3 desegregation and tap into a new user base from any network, both EVM and NON-EVM, i.e., any DApp can be easily deployed to any chain, and provide an unaffected chain-agnostic user experience.


# Economy and Gameplay

Snook’s economy is inseparable from its gameplay. Moreover, if we want to create a sustainable economy, we need to foster a stable base of active users playing Snook, and that is done both through strong game design and also, very much with appropriate economic incentives.

#### **Background and Context**

The Snook Economy evolved and changed over time. The first major change was published on  December 9th, 2021 - [Snook: Economy Upgrade — Light Paper](https://playsnook.medium.com/snook-economy-upgrade-light-paper-december-2021-4ea7e2eb0cfe). Its purpose was to fix some fundamental faults we uncovered in the game's fundamental design and economy. We wanted to safeguard the original vision of Snook: A game that rewards performance achieved through hard work, commitment, skill, and talent. The approach was not to “plug” holes, but rather to identify architectural faults and redesign them.

Without going into the weeds (and also since you can read the light paper on your own), we were able to realize the goals we set, and Snook adopted a revamped game design that solved the problems and offered a stronger, truer to the vision gaming experience. It was then that Snook introduced PPK, eradicated the “feeders”, transitioned to a multi-chain architecture, etc.

Once that stage was fully integrated, we had time to go back to the original product roadmap, adapt it to fit the new architecture and get back on track. And we’ve done exactly that over the past 6 months. Since this is a new version of the Snook Whitepaper, there will be some repetition with the light paper.


# Money Fundamentals

#### **Definition of Money**

Money has many definitions. The multitude of definitions is a source of confusion. Aristotle defined the following as the most basic absolutes of money:

* Durable - Simple enough.&#x20;
* Portable - or Easily Transferable.&#x20;
* Divisible - or Serves as a Unit of Measurement. (We clarify this below)&#x20;
* Intrinsically Valuable - Let’s change that to Has or Represents Value.

The first two conditions describe a technical issue that can easily be resolved with today’s technology. The two last conditions touch, IMHO, the true essence of money. **Money measures something and it has or represents value.** An alternative definition we offer here is the following. **Money is anything that you can:**

* **Give** (to others and they will be willing to get it from you)
* **Get** (from others, regardless of their willingness)
* **Hold** (for future Give or Get)

This may seem simplistic, but we challenge you to provide something that most people would reject as de-facto money and that, at the same time, meets these criteria, and vice versa, something that most people would consider to be money and that does not meet these criteria. We tried and could not find such examples.

#### **Valuation of Money**

Determining the value of any currency (cryptocurrency or FIAT) can be done in three ways:

* **Market Supply and Demand.** Allowing the “free” market to set the exchange rate in, theoretically, perfect, frictionless and free exchanges.
* **Growth-rate of Source(s) of Value.** Measuring the positive or negative growth rate of the sources of value that are reflected in its exchange rate and adjusting its supply to fit that rate. Central banks (try to or are supposed to try to) do that in order to reduce the risk of toxic inflation/deflation.
* **A bit of both.** The exchange rate of most, if not all, FIAT currencies is set by both floating rates in free markets and by the actions of central banks that have control over some of the supply.

#### **Intrinsic value and representation of value**

We’ve all heard the claim that some types of money do not have intrinsic value. Some people have said that about cryptocurrencies, others have said that about the US dollar. What are the implications of this debate? This question becomes more pronounced when one looks at the crypto-token markets with their massive value fluctuations and crashes.

Here’s our position: there’s a confusion between money having or not having intrinsic value and money being a function of real value created by a group (company, ecosystem or country). Money doesn’t have to have intrinsic value. Money needs to reflect value. Indeed, we have been using money that has zero intrinsic value for a while now and it seems to be working fine (without implying that it doesn’t represent actual value).

#### **Underlying Value can exist without tangible collaterals**

What about the claim that if there are no specific, tangible assets backing a currency, perhaps it has no sources of value, and the only determinants of its value are the “free” markets and the feeble actions of central banks. The fact that the “free” market is probably the most dominant determinant of the value of money does not mean that money does not have sources of value (it’s an enthymeme). **We claim that all currencies reflect actual work-driven, underlying value created in the world and appreciated as such by users.** This “underlying value” is hidden underneath the local exchange-rate fluctuations (that can be the result of a variety of volatility-inducing events or manipulation or both).

#### **Currency Stability**

The interesting question is the relationship of the money being minted and the Underlying Value created by the entity minting it. On a long-enough time-scale, and after cleaning out the local fluctuations, we will see that if there is a lasting discrepancy between the traded value (exchange rate) and the actual Underlying Value, the traded value will eventually correct to fit the Underlying Value. In simple terms, if ecosystem X issues a currency and if ecosystem X’s economy underperforms (i.e., the sources of underlying value are not as productive as they should be), its currency exchange rate will, eventually, drop proportionally. Even without tangible, clearly visible backing assets, all currencies reflect Underlying Value and have “sources of value”. Moreover, if the rate in which an ecosystem issues currency is different (faster or slower) than the growth rate of the growth of the economy that it represents, it will lead to inflation/deflation and devaluation/revaluation of the currency. If the money is completely disconnected from the actual value being created, there is almost a certainty that such discrepancies will occur, and they can become toxic very fast.  If we have something that is measurable, countable, fungible and directly connected to the Underlying Value, we have a good candidate for a new currency that is less likely to suffer toxic fluctuations.

#### **Source of Underlying Value**

**Here are the assumptions we use when we describe the source of Underlying Value:**

* The source of Underlying Value is the energy invested through purposeful action. This means two things:&#x20;
  * The only way to create new underlying value is by adding energy (work) to the system.&#x20;
  * That energy being invested is “directional”. If it promotes the purpose of the economy, it creates new value. If it impedes, it destroys existing value.
* Different actions (invested energy), applied by different agents, at different times and circumstances create/destroy value at different rates.&#x20;
* It’s possible to measure the value created/destroyed.&#x20;
* It’s possible to change the unit of measurement over time without destabilizing the economy.


# Economy Fundamentals

The inescapable conclusion from the discussion about the fundamentals of money is that the only important economic engine and true and sustainable source of value is the energy invested through purposeful action. For Snook that is playing Snook.

That purposeful action is directly accrued and stored (or measured by - there’s no real difference) in the snook-NFT and indirectly in $SNK.  When we discuss supply and demand we need to address both forms of value “yardsticks”.

These two sides of the Snook economy, namely, the $SNK and the Traits and Special Skins are fundamental to understanding the mechanics of the economy. We’ll start with the less obvious one - the Trait Economy

#### **Tokens**

Snook's economy is based on two protocols, ERC20 and ERC721 (for its NFT).

#### **The $SNK**

The $SNK is an ERC20 cryptocurrency. We say cryptocurrency and not a crypto-token because we discern between the two. Crypto-tokens do not have to be money at all. Our snook-NFT is such a token. Instead they are defined by their utility. Just like the bracelet in a theme park or the jeton at the casino are not currency - simply because they are not acceptable tender outside their function. The three main categories that map the crypto ecosystem are: Utility tokens, Security token, and Currency replacements.

We see the $SNK as a currency replacement. We also see it as a utility token, but that does not matter, because all currencies also meet the criteria for utility.

Let’s start with why it is not a security. That one is easy. We do not think the $SNK is a security because it does not meet the Howey test, nor the Reves test.

The reason we see it as a currency replacement is because, as we implied, the distinction between a utility token and a currency replacement has very little to do with the substance. In fact, historically, all currencies started as utility tokens. In time they became popular and they gradually morphed into a currency state. The most recent example of that is the M-Pesa case in East Africa (circa 2006), where a cell-phone token for topping-up prepaid contracts, became a regulated currency. The reality is that the distinction is a matter of use and popularity and has little to do with the function or utility.

#### **Snook's Non-fungible Tokens (snook) - ERC721**

The snook-NFT is based on the ERC721 protocol.&#x20;

snooks are the characters used by the users in-game. Upon death inside the game, the snook is burned if no resurrection has been placed by the user. snook NFTs are storing all the necessary game events like score, traits collected, skin appearance, and so on. With the right rarity, snooks are also applicable for rewards to incentivize the users to keep on exploring new special skins and increase their Snook's rarity through skill, time & adrenaline.


# SNK Cash Flow Analysis

Much the same way a company’s cash flow can provide deep insight into its strategy, mechanics and design, it can do the same to an economy. Below we describe the main channels through which different monetary vehicles flow in and out of the Snook economy.**+**

# SNK Inflow


# Minting snook-NFTs

Minting a new snook-NFT produces two key “objects”. The first is a fresh snook that can be used as a character in Snook, and as such the utility of play. The second is the Trait that is assigned to that freshly minted snook. That Trait, as we introduced in the Ontology above, has two functions. The first is the play utility. The second is serving as Snook’s fundamental, unpegged vehicle for storing monetary value. That value is not directly stored in the snook-NFT as you can see below. The funds ($1.25USD) paid for minting are distributed:

* Burned – $0.25USD (20%)&#x20;
* Ecosystem – $0.05USD (4%) to help pay the on-going infrastructure and gas fees&#x20;
* Treasury – $0.95USD (76%). It will then be further allocated:&#x20;
  * Pay Per Kill: $0.75USD (60%)&#x20;
  * Snook’s Ladder Prize pool: $0.15USD (12%)&#x20;
  * LP staking: $0.05USD (4%)

Those of you with a keen eye would realize that although there’s no direct transfer of value into the NFT in the minting process, there is an indirect transfer of value. Specifically, via the Snook economy, i.e., the snook in-game utility and the Trait economy we discuss below. This is offset by the burning of 20% of the $SNK and is reflected through the open market value associated with Traits and Special Skins. Think about it. Can you see it? More about that in Trait Economy.


# Resurrecting deceased snooks

**Payment Structure**

The resurrection cost is proportional (not linear) to the number of Traits a recently deceased snook had. The total effective cost of resurrection is comprised of two types of payment:

1. Direct payment in $SNK

   Despite the fact that it costs the equivalent of $1.25USD to mint a snook-NFT, the floor/face-value of a Trait is not $1.25USD simply because not all Traits are “created equal”. In other words, some Traits are more common than others. The simple truth is that we don’t know what the exact face-value is and since that value, as we will explain, continues to change over time, this will remain the state of affairs.
2. Payment in-kind with Traits, that, as we mentioned before, serve as a vehicle for storing value. The implementation is simple:
   * First resurrection of a given snook will bring the snook back minus one randomly selected Trait that was associated with it.&#x20;
   * Second resurrection of the same snook will incur a price of two Traits (on top of the direct payment of $SNK). You get the gist, it’s turtles all the way down.

Now you see why it's always good to collect and have spare Traits? Actually, that’s not the most important reason. Soon all will be revealed.

#### **Resurrection/Fusion: Distribution of funds**

Resurrection fees and Fusion as well, all go directly to the Treasury. Further allocation is done through the Treasury.

#### **Calculating the direct cost**

$$d\_b$$ adjusts the resurrection price of the snook based on the number of Traits the snook has at the moment of death and its ranking relative to all other snooks. To calculate $$d\_b$$ we will use mock data for 10 different snooks as shown in the table below.

In the next table we can see that we have 5 snooks with 1 property (i.e., Trait), 4 snooks with 2 properties, and 1 snook with 4 properties.

# Activity-tied Staking

As mentioned above in Staking in Game Modes under Gameplay, creating BBT-TR requires staking of $SNK. Understanding this mechanism is important.

First, as far as we know, it is a first. We’re tying together the staking of a cryptocurrency with a value-creating activity in the Snook DApp. Why is that interesting or good? Well, you can think of the amount staked by the owners of the BBT-TR as an Earnest Money deposit that can be redeemed at the will of the user (under the terms of the contract).&#x20;

The BBT-TR requires SNK stake to be kept for the BBT-TR to be available. That means that the staking is not only a vote of confidence in the $SNK as a cryptocurrency at the time of the deposit. It is ongoing. As long as people like to play and are using the BBT-TR, they will not touch that deposit. In fact, every time they decide to keep it and not redeem it, they are doing so by comparing the value that they get out of the game with the potential profit they can realize by redeeming the stake and selling the $SNK. You are starting to see why this simple feature has so much potential?


# SNK Outflow

Outflow of $SNK is predominantly realized through PPK Rewards and the Snook Ladder prize pool, which we discuss below. However, two additional cash outflow mechanisms exist:

1. Ecosystem Fund which is based on the 4% allocation from minting.&#x20;
2. Staking rewards which are funded with 4% of minting and 5.2% from Resurrection/Fusion.

An additional mechanism is relevant here, although it is not an outflow in the true sense of the term - burning $SNK. Whenever a new snook is minted 20% of the $SNK inflow is burned. This is not an artificial deflationary tool. It reflects the direct transfer of value from $SNK into the snook-NFT.


# PPK Rewards

The payout of the rewards, although seemingly straight forward, presented us with a problem. The intuitive way was to pay the reward in $SNK. The same $SNK that were used for Minting or resurrecting and that were allocated for PPK Rewards. However, this meant that if a Snooker Killed a snook that was Minted when the value of $SNK was lower than it is at the time that he claimed the reward, he would get more $SNK which would be worth more. An example would illustrate:

* Say that a snook was Killed. Let’s say that at the time of its Minting, 1 $SNK was worth $1USD.&#x20;
* That means that its PPK allocation and reward should be 0.12 $SNK (which at the time of Minting were worth $ 0.15USD).&#x20;
* Now imagine a scenario in which at the time the Snooker who Killed that snook claims the PPK Reward 1 $SNK is worth $10USD. Those 0.15 $SNK would then be worth $1.5USD.

Although this may be confusing to some, this is not necessarily a problem. The value of $SNK could go up or down and being paid in $SNK, based on the amount of SNK that were allocated at the time of the Minting, would reflect those changes.

Nevertheless, this approach is less practical for two reasons. The first is that it brings up complicated implementation issues. We would need to track every Mint and be able to match the exact amount of SNK allocated for that Mint as the claimable reward. It would make the Treasury very complex, and we try to avoid complexity, especially in reward systems. It would be a lot simpler to mix all the PPK allocations in one pot. The second problem is, as we briefly mentioned and exemplified above, that the payout could be quite widely spread, depending on the $SNK to USD exchange rate. We suspect it would be confusing to explain, especially to new Snookers, why one Kill yielded a reward worth 5 cents while another yielded a reward worth 5 dollars.

We could theoretically pay the PPK Rewards in USDC, but that would expose the Treasury to a potential deficit and that’s not happening (we’re not a hedge fund, we just wanna play).

We came up with a solution that is simple to implement, does not incur potentially high gas costs when interacting with the Mint contract, and ensures the Treasury doesn't run a deficit:

* All the PPK allocations in the Treasury – mixed.&#x20;
* A local average is calculated every time there’s a PPK Reward claim

Here’s how the **local average calculation** is done:

1. The PPK contract keeps track of two numbers:&#x20;
   * The number of Mints with a snook Population Counter (sPC)&#x20;
   * The total amount allocated for PPK rewards with a Pot Counter (PC)&#x20;
2. Every time a snook is Minted, or resurrected the PPK contract adds 1 to the sPC and adds the $SNK amount allocated to the PC&#x20;
3. When a snooker makes a claim, after it is verified as valid, the contract:&#x20;
   * Calculates the PPK Reward per snook Killed, by dividing the amount kept in the PC by the snook population kept in the sPC (that’s the local average).&#x20;
   * It then multiplies that amount by the number of snooks the snooker is claiming for.&#x20;
   * It then subtracts the number of snooks the Snooker is claiming for, from the sPC.&#x20;
   * And finally, it subtracts the paid amount from the PC...

That way the PPK rewards’ Pot has an amount that is always proportional to the (Killable) snook population size captured in the sPC. We also address two other cases:

1. **Dying at the wall**

   In this case the sPC will subtract 1 because a snook is out of circulation. The PC will remain unchanged. Effectively it means that dying without a Killer will slightly increase the rewards for whomever claims (posthumously).
2. **Resurrection**

   It’s a rebirth and there’s a Killable snook back in circulation, which is why that snook will be recounted in the sPC. Also, there’s an allocation from the Resurrection fees toward the PPK Rewards and so that amount will be added to the PC.

# Trait Economy

#### Raison d'être and Economic Trait Taxonomy

We could have called it the Special Skin economy. However, from a purely economic POV, the fundamental unit of measurement on the NFT side of the economy is the Trait. In fact, from that POV, Special Skins, or snooks are nothing more than Trait repositories.&#x20;

There are several ways of getting Traits. None is free. Acquiring Traits demands investment of time, work and sometimes money (although Snook is not a very welcoming environment for those who think that money alone can be a sustainable source of progress).

It should be clearly stated, minting is the main and most dominant source of Traits in the Snook-verse. It may sound trivial, however, there are other, a bit more “exotic” sources of Traits. Nevertheless, those are negligible in comparison to the simple act of minting a snook that “births” a new random Trait into existence.

Now, because playing in the Battle Arena is the main reason for minting (it’s possible to mint and never play, but again, that is not a significant activity), it is fair to say that the Battle Arena is the engine driving the supply side of the Trait economy.

#### **Other sources of Traits**

Other than minting there are two additional ways of getting a Trait:

* Winning matches in the Battle Arena - A probability function determines if the winner gets a special Trait that is only available by winning or through the Vault&#x20;
* The Vault - The same Special Trait is also available once the Vault opens

Also, it is possible that Traits will be available in the future in other avenues in the game, or as part of promotional activities.

### **Trait Outflow - Snook Ladder the engine driving Trait Demand**

**In “Trait Outflow”  we mean removing Traits from circulation. Reducing the number of Traits creates demand. That almost always happens when a snook dies (either in the Battle Arena or the Ladder). And we mean proper death, yeah? Not just losing a life.**

1. Dying without resurrecting&#x20;
   * Snook Ladder - When a Special Skin dies in the Snook Ladder and is not resurrected it is burned and its Traits are “burned” with it.&#x20;
   * Battle Arena - When a snook (Special Skin or not) dies in the Battle Arena and is not resurrected it too is burned and its Traits are “burned” with it.
2. Resurrection - Resurrection (and Fusion too for that matter) destroys at least one Trait in the process itself.&#x20;
3. Unclaimed Traits - In the Battle Arena when a snook dies it sometimes drops a Trait (or Traits). If that Trait is not picked up by another snook (within a fairly short time frame) it disappears (into the void of Cthulhu).

We should note that these options are not symmetrical. Losing Traits in the battle arena affects the Snook economy much the same way that losing change in the sofa affects the household economy. Both do, and it might not be a negligible effect, but none are decisive. The Ladder remains the main source of demand.


# Balanced Supply and Demand

### **The Snook Ladder and Battle Arena - balanced Supply and Demand**

The most basic dynamic for describing the forces that govern an economy is supply and demand. In the Snook-verse the Battle Arena is chiefly the source of supply to the Ladder and vice versa, the Ladder is the source of demand for the Battle Arena. As such they form a balanced economic dyad.&#x20;

The supply-demand balance doesn’t stem only from the introduction of new Traits to circulation, and removal and burning of existing Traits. It is also directly tied to the utility or functional roles the two environments play.

Here’s the scenario, play-by-play:

1. First, stock up on Traits - Battle Arena the real Grinder
   * A first-time Snooker goes to the Battle Arena, or tries to go to the Ladder, only to realize she doesn’t have a Special Skin.&#x20;
   * She spends time “grinding” in the Battle Arena, collecting Traits, unlocking special skins, and getting better at the game.&#x20;
   * During that time, her $SNK balance grew from the PPK.
2. Spend your stock in Snook’s Ladder
   * Once she has enough Traits, Special skins and confidence to enter the Snook Ladder, she has to wait for the season, and for the weekend.&#x20;
   * She starts playing in the Snook Ladder and she’s excited. Perhaps she even won a match or two. Her Ladder score grows and with it her ranking.&#x20;
   * At a certain point her Special Skin, with all its 12 Traits, dies. Regardless of the fact that 12 Traits were just removed from the economy, she is now down a Special Skin and the economy’s Trait supply is down 12 Traits.&#x20;
   * Since she might not have another Special Skin or enough snooks to Fuse into a Special Skin, she goes back to the Battle Arena to stock up again. She might be able to do it fast enough to get back to the Ladder.&#x20;
   * Since the Ladder season is based on score, and since the Ladder is only open 23% of the time, there’s a strong incentive to maximize the play time during the open weekend windows. That puts pressure on heavily stocking up during the weekdays.

This game dynamic produces a positive feedback loop that is reflected in this simulated supply-demand curve:

# Implications - Role Strata

This economic equilibrium between the Snook Ladder (Demand) and the Battle Arena (demand) fosters the development of a strata of “roles”. In that we mean a naturally emerging order of different layers of Snookers that tend to focus on specific links in the value chain. This is not news. Value chains in the traditional economy separate different functions as well. Some people and organizations focus on extracting raw materials, others process it and add value to it until it forms into a product or service. The roles we present below describe a rough distinction, and the reality will include additional roles and a lot of overlap.

#### **Trait Hunters**

Trait hunters play snook to collect Traits predominantly in order to sell them (i.e., the snook-NFT they are associated with). They form a spectrum of course. Some would only collect Traits and the occasional Special Skin (although they would avoid risking it in the arena once they have it). Others would occasionally play Snook’s Ladder. Regardless, the key point is that these players specialize in relatively low-risk, low reward activity supplying the next stratum.

#### **Trait Combinators and Special Skin “retailers”**

Both by collecting Traits directly and (mostly) by buying Traits, they will collect an inventory of Special Skins.

#### **Trait and Special Skin Traders**

They make the most of marketplace arbitrage opportunities to scout, buy and aggregate Trait inventories (less by actually playing).

#### **Ladders**

Forming the Demand side, they will play the Battle Arena to collect Traits, but they will also buy them mostly as Special Skins. Buying them as snooks means they will have to upgrade them by playing or with fusion - both options incurring cost/risk. It therefore depends on the market prices and alternative costs.
